Neither of these two methods are done in our Clinics, as they leave scars on the skin and are not as effective, compared to Laser.
Cryotherapy of Skin Tags
Cryotherapy is a treatment that has been used for many years in Dermatology to treat various benign skin lesions, including skin tags. In this method liquid nitrogen spray is used and sprayed over the lesions, as a result of which they are cooled and thus destroyed. It is an easy procedure, relatively inexpensive and does not require the use of local anaesthesia.
However, its effectiveness as a treatment is not the same as the effectiveness of Laser CO2, as it needs more than one session to damage skin tags. Each session is repeated after 2 weeks to 1 month. Another disadvantage of this treatment is that it can create white scars in the area, due to the cooling in the depth of the dermis. Furthermore, cryotherapy has a very high rate of recurrence of skin tags compared to Laser CO2.
Electrocautery - Electrocoagulation
of Skin Tags
Cauterization is one of the oldest methods of treating skin tags, by burning them with the use of electricity. The electrocauterization of skin tags is done using a special unipolar diathermy device and the recovery time is 2-3 weeks.
For this specific treatment, the use of local anaesthesia with injection is required, while at the same time there is a risk that it will leave scars in the area and hypopigmentation afterwards. The long recovery time and the very high rate of recurrence of skin tags compared to Laser CO2, are among the disadvantages of the treatment.

What are Skin Tags?
Skin tags are benign skin lesions caused by HPV viruses, the viruses that cause common warts and genital warts, with the only difference being that they are not as contagious. Usually their colour is the same as that of the skin, while they can be pink, brown or even dark. In this case, many confuse them with moles. It has been estimated that 50% of adults manifest at least one skin tag during their lifetime.
Skin tags mainly look like they are hanging by a thread, but there are also lesions that are more flat. They usually appear in adults as scattered lesions and apart from an aesthetic point of view, they do not cause symptoms and do not pose any medical risk to our health. Only in case of intense friction they can bleed, cause itching or some irritation.

Skin tags are benign skin lesions and must be protected from infection and bleeding until they are removed. Some ways of protection are:
- Avoid wearing jewellery around the neck that can cause friction and spreading
- Avoid shaving the affected areas with a razor

- Do not attempt to remove them yourself using a thread

Myths & Truths about Skin Tags
Myth: Skin Tags and Genital Warts are the same
Truth: Skin tags are caused by HPV viruses, but from different subtypes of the HPV virus than genital warts. Another big difference between them is the way each virus is transmitted. Warts are transmitted through sexual contact, while skin tags are transmitted through the sharing of sponges, towels and razors. They are not so easily spread from person to person, but can spread to other parts of the body by friction.
Myth: Skin Tags don't spread
Truth: This is not true, as when there is friction they can be transmitted to other parts of the body. Therefore it would be good to have a treatment to remove them to prevent their transmission.
Frequent Questions about Skin Tags
Skin tags is a low-risk virus and poses no health risk. They just spread. So in case you do not want to have any treatment for your skin tags, you should know that they are most likely to multiply and be transferred to other parts of your body.
Skin tags cannot turn into skin cancer, as the subtypes of HPV viruses that cause them are subtypes that do not cause skin cancer.
Laser CO2 is a non-surgical method of skin tags removal and all you will have after your treatment is a small crust for a few days. To protect you against infections, we always recommend the preventive use of antibiotic cream for a few days after the treatment.
