Migraine is a disorder that affects millions of people worldwide and has a serious impact on their quality of life. Migraine, unlike a simple headache, is a neurological condition whose main symptom is intense pain located only on one side of the head.
This pain can be located in the temples, the top of the head or the back of the neck and is due to the intense tightening of the muscles in the respective areas. However, in addition to the intense headache, migraine has accompanying symptoms like photophobia and vomiting which can be unbearable and significantly limit the quality of life of these patients. Migraine is divided into acute and chronic.
In Chronic Migraine the pain occurs more than 15 days a month and although not all attacks are necessarily of great intensity, they lead to significant negative effects on the patients' quality of life, but also on their ability to function normally in their professional, family and social life. Chronic migraine usually occurs after several years in which acute migraine progressively increases in frequency.
Botox treatment is applied where the pain is located and can be applied to the forehead, temples, sides of the head, but also to the back, i.e. the neck and back. Botox is applied to the side where the headache is located, but should be applied symmetrically to the opposite side as well, even if the patient does not have pain there.
This prevents the occurrence of migraine on the opposite side of the head or neck, which can occur when the muscles are injected only one side and the nerve impulse can be transferred to the opposite side. Botox in patients with chronic migraine is administered by microinjections intramuscularly in 31-39 points and its effect begins to be noticed 5-7 days after the treatment.
Avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. Mesulid, Brufen, Voltaren) and analgesics (e.g. aspirin) for at least one week before the treatment, as they increase the possibility of bleeding and therefore bruising, during the treatment.
Also avoid taking vitamins and multivitamin preparations, for at least one week before the treatment, as these are substances that increase the bleeding tendency and consequently the risk of bruising.
It would be best not to consume alcohol 24 hours before your treatment.
You can return to your activities immediately, as long as you do not touch the area, where the medicine was injected, for at least the first 4 hours.
Avoid lying down for the first 4 hours after treatment. This will prevent the medication from moving into other adjacent areas.
It is best to avoid vigorous aerobic exercise for 1 day.
Try to avoid hot showers and excessive sun exposure for the next 2 days.
Avoid alcohol and aspirin for 1 day after your treatment.
It is also good not to use a hair dryer on or near the areas of the head where you had Botox on the first day of your treatment.

Truth: No, not at all. What is happening is exactly the opposite. The neurotoxin of Botox blocks the transmission of nerve impulses during the treatment period, so the muscles have reduced activity and this prevents them from contracting and becoming progressively hypertrophic, causing even greater problems. Essentially Botox stops the time, at the point you had the treatment and if you stop using Botox the muscles will return to where they were when you had your last Botox and not worse.
Truth: In fact, the exact opposite is true. The regular application of the treatment results in the muscles remaining calm for a longer period of time. Regular treatment with Botox does not let the migraines reappear and maintains the good initial effect, without reducing the effectiveness of the treatment! Essentially, the frequent repetition, when is done at the right time and not too soon, improves the quality of life of these patients even more and essentially reduces the need for continuous use of pills.
It is good to repeat the treatment 2-3 times a year, when the body has fully metabolized the substance and mobility returns to the muscles of the head and neck.
The effect of the medication begins to be seen 5-7 days after the treatment and is completed in 15 days, when you will have the final result of your treatment. Within these first two weeks, the frequency and intensity of your headaches will gradually begin to decrease.
There is no ideal age to start Botox for Migraines and it can be given to people aged 18 and over when their quality of life has been significantly impaired, due to frequent and severe headaches.
Clearly yes, as some of the points where Botox injections are made for migraines are on the forehead and so forehead and mid-frown wrinkles will be reduced.
Most insurance companies will cover at least a portion of the cost of botox injections for migraines. However, coverage may vary depending on your insurance plan. It’s essential to check with your insurance provider to see what is covered under your plan.
Some of the eligibility criteria that insurance companies use to determine coverage for botox injections include :
Number of Migraines : You must have a certain number of migraines per month to be eligible for coverage and that is typically between eight and twelve migraines per month.
Previous Treatment : You may be required to have tried other treatments for migraines before your insurance company covers botox injections. In some cases, your insurance company may only cover a portion of the cost of botox injections. In this case, you may be responsible for paying the remaining balance out-of-pocket.
Patient is Diagnosed With Chronic Headaches: Some insurance companies will only cover botox injections if you have been diagnosed with Chronic Headaches by a Doctor.
Active Skin Infections: If you have infections or irritations in the area where Botox for Migraines is to be applied, the treatment should be postponed until they have settled.
Neurological problems: ou should avoid Botox for Migraines if you have neuromuscular disorders, such as Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome or have had recent episodes of seizures.
Allergy to Botox: If you have a known allergy to Botox or any of its ingredients, you should not use the product.
Bleeding disorders: People with bleeding disorders or those taking blood-thinning medications (anticoagulants), have a relative contraindication to Botox for Migraines, as it increases the risk of bleeding and bruising at the injection sites.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The use of Botox for Migraines is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
