What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural glycosaminoglycan, a substance produced in the human body. It is known for its excellent ability to bind and retain water (holding up to 1000 times its weight in water and increasing its volume up to 20 times), which makes it an extremely hydrophilic molecule and a very effective skin moisturizer.

How does Hyaluronic Acid work?

Medical History - Face Assessment
First, there is a discussion with the Doctor about your needs and wishes. If you have had a similar treatment in the past, you must let us know when this was, as well as for the type of hyaluronic acid and for the areas where the material was injected, as not all fillers interact well with each other. After studying your skin type and the needs of your face, the Doctor suggests the appropriate fillers that can offer you the desired result and designs your treatment plan.
Skin Preparation - Anaesthetic Cream
Preparation for hyaluronic acid treatment begins with thorough cleansing of the skin and antisepsis. Then on clean skin, an anaesthetic cream is applied so that any discomfort is reduced to a minimum and the treatment is completely tolerable.
Marking - Filler Application
In this step, the anaesthetic cream is removed and the Doctor will mark on your face the areas where the injections of the filler will be made and immediately after that the treatment will begin.
Post Treatment Instructions
The Doctor records in your file the areas of the face and the number of mls of hyaluronic acid used per area and gives you detailed instructions for the following days.

Instructions before Hyaluronic Acid treatment
Avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. Mesulid, Brufen, Voltaren) and analgesics (e.g. aspirin) for at least one week before the treatment, as they increase the possibility of bleeding and therefore bruising, during the treatment.
Also avoid taking vitamins and multivitamin preparations, for at least one week before the treatment, as these are substances that increase the bleeding tendency and consequently the risk of bruising.
It would be best not to consume alcohol 24 hours before your treatment.
Before your treatment, the area of your face should be clean and without make-up.
Do not do the treatment 1-5 days before an important event, because there might be bruising or swelling at the injection sites. It is better to schedule it a week in advance.
Instructions after Hyaluronic Acid treatment
You can return to your activities immediately, as long as you do not touch the area where the filler was injected, unless the Doctor recommends that you massage the area. If you attempt to massage, without the advice of the Doctor, there is a risk of displacing the hyaluronic acid to another area, causing unwanted results.
Swelling at the injection sites is always present in everyone after the application of hyaluronic acid (especially in the lip area where it is much more intense) and you can treat it by applying an ice cold pack or a cold compress to the sites several times a day, for 5 - 10 minutes each time, for the first 2 - 5 days.
When you touch the areas that the filler was placed, it is possible to feel the hyaluronic inside to be hard. This is normal and expected for everyone and this hard feeling of the material can last for up to a week.
Avoid intense facial expressions and lip biting for 48 hours.
There is no restriction on the application of your make-up and you can use your lipstick from the same day of application.
It is advisable to avoid intense aerobic or resistance exercises for the next 1-2 days after application, so that any swelling in the area does not intensify.
Try to avoid hot showers and excessive sun exposure for the next 2 days.
Avoid alcohol and aspirin for 1 day after the treatment. It is recommended to drink plenty of water around 2 liters for the first week after your treatment, as hyaluronic is a hydrophilic molecule and this will help it to swell more.
If you experience bruising at the injection sites, you can treat them with a topical arnica cream.

Truth: We would not say that one treatment is better than the other. We could say that one treatment complements the other and that the combination of both, in the same session is ideal.
