What is Chemical Peeling?

Chemical Peeling is a facial treatment that uses specific ingredients that cause mild or deeper peeling of the skin, revealing fresh, firm and marks-free skin. The peelings are all time classic treatments suitable for women and men, for every skin, for every age, as well as for every season of the year.

Chemical Peeling can be applied using different ingredients, depending on the specific needs of each skin and with different results: there are deep chemical peels, which cause intense peeling on the skin and effectively repair acne scars, post-traumatic scars and deep wrinkles and other peels that are gentler, which they can be done even on the most sensitive skin and at any time of the year, even in summer.

Chemical Peeling Application Areas

Face

Ageing and exposure to environmental conditions (sun, changes in temperature and humidity) leave our facial skin dull and tired, with fine wrinkles and signs of photoaging. Also on the facial skin there are often marks left by acne (especially if it is not treated on time). The application of Chemical Peeling on the face brings to the surface a new, healthy and shiny skin, with less visible marks.

Neck & Décolletage

Both ageing and photoageing have a negative effect on the skin of the neck and décolletage, with the characteristic freckles and discolorations appearing in these areas after the age of 40. Together we will choose the Chemical Peeling that is most suitable for you to "erase" discolorations and fine lines and restore elasticity and shine to these areas.

Buttocks

One of the most common skin problems in both men and women is folliculitis on the buttocks, but also acne on the buttocks. An excellent and economical solution for this area, both for acne and folliculitis, is Chemical Peeling treatment.

Back and Chest

20% of people have acne on the trunk, specifically on their chest and back. Chemical Acne Peeling when combined with Dermalux Phototherapy, kills the Acne Propionibacterium and regulates oiliness and is a treatment of choice for these areas with minimal recovery time and maximum results.

The advantages of Chemical Peeling

Types of Chemical Peeling, depending on the depth of action

Chemical Peeling can be divided into three important categories according to the depth of their action: Superficial, Medium, Deep.
Επιφανειακό Χημικό Peeling

Superficial Peelings

This specific category of Chemical Peeling acts mainly on the surface of the skin. It is used to treat fine lines, acne, discolorations and dehydrated skin and is the most common used type of Chemical Peeling. As far as their action is concerned, the Superficial Peelings have, as you understand, the weakest action and no recovery time.

Medium Peelings

These Chemical Peelings penetrate up to the upper part of the dermis, removing both the surface and the middle layer of the skin. Medium Peelings are mainly used to treat scars, deeper wrinkles, surface imperfections and pigmentation problems. The recovery time required is around 3-4 days.
Μεσαίο Χημικό Peeling
Βαθύ Χημικό Peeling

Deep Peelings

Deep Peelings reach the lowest layer of the dermis, the reticular dermis. This particular type of peeling is ideal for treating more serious skin problems, such as the deepest wrinkles and acne scars. The recovery time required is closer to 10-14 days, but their results are excellent. Since, as the name suggests, this particular treatment is quite strong, it is recommended to be done only once or twice per year, as it requires a longer healing time.

Types of Chemical Peeling, depending on the active ingredient

Trichloroacetic Αcid TCA Peeling

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a Chemical Peeling used in concentrations of 10-15-20% up to 70%. Its main indications are photoageing, actinic hyperkeratoses, wrinkles and acne scars. In increased concentrations of 70% it is used to treat xanthelasmas.

The choice of the appropriate concentration of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) depends on the desired depth of penetration that we want to achieve and the skin problem that we want to treat.

TCA Peeling
Phenol Peeling

Phenol Peeling

Phenol is a particularly deep peeling with an intense exfoliating effect. It is indicated for very photo-aged skin, with intense wrinkles and discolorations, as well as for skin with intense scars and marks after severe acne. Phenol sometimes results in hypopigmentation in the areas that is applied, so skin colour is a determining factor in selecting suitable individuals for phenol peels.

It exfoliates intensely and the recovery time can even reach 15 days. Special care is required in its use, by a qualified Dermatologist, with extensive knowledge of the skin and this specific treatment, as it can have serious complications.

AHA and BHA Peelings (Fruit Acids)

AHA (Alpha-Hydroxy Acid) and BHA (Beta-Hydroxy Acid) fruit acid peels are types of superficial chemical peels that use mild acids, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid or mandelic acid to gently exfoliate the skin's surface. AHA and BHA peels remove dead skin cells, improve the appearance of fine lines and unclog pores, resulting in brighter, smoother and more even skin.

Unlike TCA peels, which can cause significant peeling, AHA and BHA fruit acid peels are usually gentler and cause minimal peeling, leaving the skin soft and glowing. For many are clearly superior due to their quick recovery. Below are some of the most common fruit acid peel ingredients:

AHA Peeling με Οξέα Φρούτων
Peeling Γλυκολικού Οξέος

Glycolic Acid Peeling

The Glycolic Acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane and is used in various concentrations from 30% to 70%. It is ideal for the treatment of hyperpigmentation (such as melasma, brown spots, post-inflammatory discolorations), but also for active acne and acne scars.

The Salicylic Αcid is a type of beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). Its indications are active papulopustular acne, folliculitis, enlarged skin pores, seborrhoea, but also pigmentation disorders.

Mandelic Acid Peeling - Mykonos Peeling or Summer Peeling

Mandelic acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from almonds and has a larger molecular size compared to other AHAs. This larger size makes it less likely to penetrate deep into the skin and cause irritation, making it a good choice for people with sensitive skin.

Mandelic acid is used to hydrate and cleanse the skin, refine pores, improve fine lines and regulate sebum. It is also called Summer Peeling, as it can be done without fear even in the summer, due to its zero recovery time.

Μανδελικό Peeling
Αζελαϊκό Οξύ Peeling

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that comes from grains such as barley, wheat and rye. In skin care, it is commonly used as a peel for a variety of skin conditions (rosacea, blackheads, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and especially for acne, as it has excellent antimicrobial properties, keeps skin pores open, kills Propionibacterium Acnes and reduces inflammation. It is a suitable peeling for pimples and blackheads and offers a deep cleansing effect.

In addition to treating acne, azelaic acid also has whitening properties, so it is also used in cases where there are discolorations or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Acne Peel

Acne Peel refers to the use of special substances specially designed to target acne-prone skin to improve both its appearance and health. Acne Peel contains two main ingredients, which are salicylic and azelaic. Salicylic removes dead cells and unclogs pores, while azelaic fights the Propionibacterium Acne, thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action. Thus the main factors that cause acne are neutralised and these are P.Acnes, inflammation and blocked pores.

Acne Peel has zero recovery time and its results are visible from the very first treatment. It is designed to gently exfoliate the skin, unclog pores and reduce pimples and blackheads. Acne Peel is performed by Dermatologists and is usually part of an acne protocol, which may also include topical creams, lifestyle changes and special skin care products.

Peeling for Acne Scars

Peeling for Acne Scars

Typically on acne scars we use a concentration of 20-35% TCA all over the face, which is a medium depth chemical peel and higher concentrations of TCA locally on deep scars. TCA is considered a very effective and safe way to induce a strong regeneration of the skin, which causes severe peeling, the degree of which depends on the concentration of TCA we used.

Peeling for acne scars can be very effectively combined with Fractional Laser or Dermapen, for even greater depth of penetration and even more impressive results. After the treatment, re-epithelialization follows and the new skin is smoother, without scars, shiny and elastic.

Bright Peel - Whitening Peeling

Bright Peel is a term used to describe a type of chemical peel intended to brighten the skin and improve its overall appearance. This peel contains ingredients like hydroquinone, kojic acid, arbutin, tranexamic acid and vitamin C, which are known to have powerful whitening properties.

These substances reduce the proliferation of melanocytes and therefore the production of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for the appearance of melasma, spots and other skin discolorations. They are suitable peelings for freckles, but also for the treatment of all hyperpigmentations of the skin, due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation. In addition, the substances contained in the Whitening Peeling have anti-inflammatory properties and prevent the appearance of possible post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which make it an ideal peeling for treating acne and rosacea.

PRX T33 Peeling

PRX - T33 Biostimulation Peeling

PRX-T33 belongs to the new generation peelings, which aim at the biorejuvenation of the skin, without exfoliation. It contains a combination of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) at a concentration of 33% and Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) and Kojic Acid. It has a patented composition, which leaves the upper layers of the skin intact and therefore has no recovery time at all. This formulation provides all the benefits of a TCA peel, without the associated side effects such as discomfort and intense peeling for days.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) acts directly on the deeper layers of the skin, causing intense biostimulation that gives instant hydration and firming, Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) stimulates collagen and elastin production and kojic acid helps brighten and even skin tone.

Nanopeeling

Nano in size, Giga in effect!

Another modern peeling is the Nanopeeling, which uses nanotechnology to improve the skin. In essence, nanopeelings have a wide range of substances (glycolic acid, salicylic acid, etc.), just like classic chemical peelings. Its tiny size allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin to release its active ingredients, causing a targeted action.

The results can be great, removing the damaged outer layer of the skin, fighting wrinkles, spots and acne scars and revealing a fresher version of the skin, avoiding any unwanted side effects and without causing intense peeling.

Chemical Peeling Prices - Cost

The prices of chemical peels depend on their type, if they are superficial or medium or deep. The average treatment starts from 50 euros. As you know you get what you pay for and you should be suspicious for very low prices from beauty salons, which offer supposedly genuine medical peels, when in reality they are working with chinese products.

You should be careful and check before you book any treatment package with them, first of all if they are doing these treatments illegally and if they have the proper training and knowledge of the skin so they won't burn you. As you will then pay double and triple to Doctors, to fix their complications.

Chemical Peeling Step-by-Step

Step 1

Medical History - Skin Assessment

Before any other action, it is important to make a medical evaluation with a qualified Doctor, who carefully assess the condition of your skin. At this stage, a personalised medical treatment protocol will be selected, with a Chemical Peeling suitable for you based on the needs of your skin. Also at this stage, the number of sessions required and the combination of complementary treatments, which could be applied together with the Chemical Peeling for better results, are determined.

Step 2

Skin Preparation

Preparation for Chemical Peeling begins with thorough skin cleansing and antisepsis. Then, on clean skin, a special toner is applied, in order to optimise the pH of the skin.

Step 3

Application of the Peeling

After protecting the sensitive areas of the face (eyes, lips, nostrils) with a special product, we apply the peeling with the help of a brush or cotton buds. In order for the active ingredients of the peeling to penetrate deeper into the skin, a microneedling treatment can be performed at the same time with the original Dermapen 4 device.

With this treatment, small channels are created on the surface of the skin, making it easier for the peeling to penetrate into the deepest layers, making the results even more impressive. After the appropriate action time for each type of peeling, they are deactivated with special neutralizing sprays and their action is stopped.

Instructions from the Doctor and application of creams

The treatment is completed and the Doctor informs you of the instructions you need to follow in order to achieve the best possible results and avoid any side effects. At the same time, regenerating, moisturising and sunblock cream is applied to the treated area. The above creams are a major part of the skin's recovery and you should continue to apply them daily for a few days after your treatment.

Instructions after Chemical Peeling treatment

icon

Frequent moisturising of the face is very important and necessary for faster healing of the skin and you should moisturise the area where the Chemical Peeling was applied at least four times a day, for a week.

icon

Protection from the sun is equally important and necessary. In particular on the face, but also on any other area exposed to the sun where the chemical peeling was applied, we recommend that you apply sunblock cream, on top of your moisturiser for at least 1 week.

icon

It is recommended to avoid make-up and the application of cosmetic products to the area for at least 24 - 48 hours after the treatment.

icon

Also, the use of regenerative cream is essential, for the best possible regeneration of the skin.

icon

We also advise you to avoid prolonged sun exposure (sunbathing / solarium) for at least 2 - 3 weeks after your treatment.

icon

You should wash your face, with a mild cleansing soap, from the first day after the treatment, being careful not to rub your skin too much. Avoid any sponges and facial cleansing devices and tap dry your skin with gentle movements with a clean towel.

icon

It is also very important to use clean sheets, pillowcases and towels after the treatment, as those already used may cause some contamination, due to the existing germs.

icon

Until your skin is fully healed and the redness is completely gone, you should avoid cosmetic products containing Retinol and Acids and any kind of Peeling or Scrub.

icon

Avoid vigorous physical activity and sauna for two to three days after your treatment, as they increase blood flow to the face and prolong redness.

Myths & Truths about Chemical Peeling

Myth: Chemical Peels should not be used for people with dry skin

Truth: The truth is, Chemical Peeling works incredibly well to treat dry skin. Chemical Peeling removes the dead cells of the outer layer of the skin and this later facilitates the penetration of everyday skin care products, such as moisturisers and anti-aging creams.

Myth: Chemical Peels can only be done in winter

Truth: Of course not. Chemical Peeling can be done at any time of the year, as there are different application protocols for winter months and others for summer months.

Myth: All Chemical Peels are the same

Truth: There are different types of peelings, each of which serves a different skin need. There are peels that are specific for acne-prone faces, such as the Acne Peel and other peels that are specific to whitening and depigmentation, such as the Bright Peel. The active substances of peelings are different in each category and therefore each one is unique in terms of its properties and its mode of action.

Frequent Questions about Chemical Peeling

The level of discomfort or pain associated with Chemical Peeling can vary depending on the type of peel and the sensitivity of the individual's skin. Most people feel only a burning or itching sensation during the treatment, which improves with the application of cold air. In general, Chemical Peels are short and painless treatments and do not require any preparation of the skin before the treatment. There is no need and we don’t recommend the use of local anaesthetic cream before Chemical Peeling.
The answer is that Chemical Peeing has a recovery time the length of which depends on the type of Chemical Peeling used in the treatment. So in superficial peelings it ranges from 2-3 days, in medium depth peelings it ranges from 4-5 days and in deep peelings from 10-15 days.
Their main difference is their tiny nano size, which allows them to penetrate deeper, without causing any side effects on the skin, such as intense peeling, dryness and discomfort. Essentially, they have the same substances used in classic peelings, but in a smaller size. They are ideal for busy people, who don’t want to be irritated at all and not to stop their daily activities.

The frequency of Chemical Peeling treatment depends on several factors, including the type of Chemical Peeling, but also the skin type and the skin problem we are being asked to treat. For example in acne, a series of peeling treatments over several weeks or months is required to achieve optimal results.

For light superficial peels, such as low concentration glycolic acid or salicylic acid peels, it is generally safe to repeat every 2-4 weeks. For deeper medium depth peels, such as TCA, it is recommended to wait at least 4-6 weeks between treatments. The even deeper phenol peelings are performed at even more sparse intervals or just even once.

The results of Chemical Peels are not permanent. Nevertheless, their results are quite impressive and can be maintained for several months, if you follow the steps that the Doctor will suggest after the treatment.
The sun's rays, especially in summer months when the temperature is at its highest, can cause damage to sensitive and freshly exfoliated skin. Sun exposure should be avoided after this treatment and the use of a sunblock cream with a high sun protection factor is essential. Taking this information into account, we can say that the ideal period for applying Chemical Peelings is during the winter months when there is no intense sunlight. The only exception to this rule is the Summer Peeling, which is made with mandelic acid, which can be safely applied even in the summer, offering a glow to the skin.

Chemical Peelings can provide impressive results, taking into account the small cost of this treatment, but there are some groups of people who should avoid it.

Chemical Peels are not an ideal treatment:

  • For people with active skin infections
  • For people with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis or psoriasis.
  • Also, expectant mothers should avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Chemical Peelings can be perfectly combined with other treatments (even on the same day) for even better results. Peelings can be combined with:

  • Botox
  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Mesotherapy Autologous or Heterologous
  • Fractional Laser, also known as Laser Peel
  • Dermapen
  • Phototherapy
  • Dermalux
